An Emergency Call

I was sitting at my desk talking with a client about his life insurance. My cell phone beeped indicating that Stephanie wanted to talk to me. I responded to the beep. (We use nextel which has a walkie talkie feature) I said that I was with a client and asked if I could call her back in just a moment. There was no response. A few minutes later, there was another beep. I responded again, but still nothing in return. I learned later that Matthew was trying to use the phone to beep me.

Working on an issue for my client, I was on the phone with a life underwriter when I heard someone in the office talking to my son Matthew on another line. I heard the question “Matthew, what’s wrong?” Immediately my heart sunk to my shoes and I immediately had a rush of adrenalin that flowed through my body. I was told that I needed to pick up line one that there was an emergency.

I told the life underwriter that I had to disconnect, that there was a family emergency that I had to respond to. I immediately hung up that line and took line one. My son, Matthew, told me that I needed to come home because my daughter, McKenna, was bleeding. I asked him if mommy was there and he just said that mommy needs you to come home right now. I told Matthew to tell mommy I would be right there.

I apologized to my client and told him that there was an emergency at home and I had to go. He obviously understood and I bolted out the door. Before I even made it to the car, my first response was to begin praying right away.

I will continue with the rest of the story in my next episode of My Crazy Life. Keep an eye out for episode #49 that I will titled “An Emergency Call.”

Business Cards Ordered

I recently mentioned in the launch episode of the Podcast Answer Man podcast, I’ve taken the first step in going from podcasting as a hobby to now podcasting as part time employment. I have purchased a copy of QuickBooks, I have purchased a professional studio microphone, a professional portable digital recording device, and a few other items here and there to get this all set up.

There are so many more things that need to be done. Before I can open a bank account, I have to register the name of my business with the Boone County Clerk here in Kentucky. I need to learn how to set up Quickbooks and how all these taxing thing works. I will share this process of getting things set up in my new Podcast Answer Man show.

One of the minor steps that I have accomplished was that I have ordered my new business cards. They look Amazing! The person who designed them is the same person behind so much of what makes portions of the GSPN site look so professional. She is working on her own website at this time and when it is set up, she will be able to start taking requests for graphic and website design word as a side job as well. You can bet that I will be referring all those who are moving into the podcast field to this person, who shall remain nameless until she is ready!

Here is what the cards will look like:

Note: this is the print layout view of the cards. There are three lines that indicate how the card will look upon completion. The card will be cut along the very light blue “trim line.” The red line will not show and is only there to indicate that anything inside the red line is completely safe from the trimmer!

New Microphone

Recently, I had the honor of talking with Leo Leporte for a short bit before he recorded his net@nite show on TalkShoe. I’ve been a huge fan of Leo’s since I first saw him on The Screen Savers. Leo introduced me to the world of podcasting with his This Week In Tech podcast.

Leo’s background includes many years in radio broadcasting before he got into the world of tech and even tv. I did not waste this opportunity! I told him that I was in the market to purchase a VERY NICE microphone for my podcasting and asked him to give me his best recommendation of a $300 to $500 microphone. He said that hands down, he would suggest that I get the Heil Sound PR-40 Broadcast Microphone. He said that this is the microphone of choice for his own radio talk show and all his podcasts.

I immediately took his advice and ordered this microphone and I’ve played around with it for a bit. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS MICROPHONE! I can’t believe how much of a difference this microphone makes over the inexpensive mics that I started out with.

At Musician’s Friend, I was able to pick this microphone up for $314.99 with a 2 year warranty for $58.25 and I didn’t want to use a $4.00 mic cable that picks up all kinds of interference, so I ordered a P500 Monster Cable 15ft for $49.95. Total Cost? $423.19

I know it sounds like a lot of money. However, I consider this an investment in something that has clearly become much more than a hobby to me.
